What is QR code

QR code stands for Quick Response Code. It is also known as a matrix barcode. In 1994, when it was created for the first time. It is a machine-readable code encrypting data about the product that is attached to it. QR codes allow large storage capabilities, including numeric, alphanumeric, byte/binary, and kanji.

QR code structure and characteristics

When coding in a QR code format, information is arranged horizontally and vertically using black squares against a white background inside a square grid. QR codes can hold a wide variety of data but their limit depends on the type of data being stored. If the input mode is only numeric for example, then a QR code can store up to 7,089 characters. Many QR codes are a mixture of input modes and will, therefore, have varying sizes and capacities.

How to use QR codes

Due to its vast storage capacity and its easier readability, the QR code became the go-to barcode outside of the automotive industry, embarking on item tracking and identification, online marketing techniques, and much more.

Compared to the standard UPC barcodes we encounter, a QR code can be read by almost any imaging device, such as smartphones, making it a hit for mobile marketing and applications. It is further processed using Reed-Solomon error correction. QR codes have been used in many businesses to expand their consumer base and are great for product management as well.
